Waste Energy, Not Time

What a strange topic, Energy Conservation. I can think of only a few instances when one would want
to conserve energy, running a long distance race for instance, or some kind of survival situation. Personally I prefer activities in which I play hard and fast and then take a rest period before doing it again; downhill skiing is a perfect example.

Now if the topic is meant to be about public energy supply like electricity or gasoline I still don't see any point in the topic. Energy is virtually unlimited. I understand it is way more than a million years before the sun is expected to burn out--plenty of time for mankind to come up with an alternative source.

Perhaps a more valid discussion would be about energy creation and distribution. Electricity, for instance, is becoming more and more expensive because of the many governmental restrictions on its production and distribution. Gasoline, fuel oil and other petroleum products are increasing in price due to economic law of supply and demand as well as government restrictions, taxes, and of course, politics.

Since it seems to be human nature to resist change by maintaining the status quo--only allowing small incremental changes to established industries like public power generation, oil industry, telecommunications--the solution must rely upon entirely new directions. The first to mind is the progress being made in using water as a fuel coupled with the surplus of water that is predicted by the melting of the polar ice caps. My favorite new energy source, however, is miniature nuclear power plants. They are currently smaller than the existing electricity sub-stations that dot most neighborhoods.

So why waste time, a truly limited commodity, on conserving something that can be produced and distributed very economically by natural forces?

Michael & Karin Shepherd left their home, business and family in Oregon, USA to relocate to a small village in West Cork, Ireland.

After operating a small grocery and living above it for four years they moved on to the sunny Greek island of Paros and the hospitality business.

Now they share their Greek island experience by offering information and private villa rentals including maps and photos. Their ParosParadise web site provides content and links for Paros, the Cyclades, Greece and the world of living abroad. They still give advice about Ireland itineraries and Prague as well.

Michael also blogs about the day to day life on a Greek isle at Paros Paradise blogspot.

We all have the option to surrender our corporate dependencies when the fast approaching global survival situation arrives. Some of us think it would be nice to do so in relative comfort. Ed Howes
